Labour Day 2005 - French River Canoe Trip

September 7, 2005 on 1:47 pm | In Camping, Canada | 1 Comment

For years, we have batted the idea of heading north (okay near north) to follow the historic Coeur de Bois/Voyageurs route along the French River. Practically a highway for trade as early as the mid-1600’s (for Westerners anyways), we had to visit this area and soak in some of the history. August 11-14, 2005 - S&C Festivities

September 7, 2005 on 1:29 pm | In Travel, Canada | No Comments

Midday Thursday, the group gathered at Kensington’s Frosty Treat for a burger and ice cream, before heading up to Thunder Cove for an afternoon of beaching, snorkelling, burying the groom and lounging before setting up for the night at the Twin Coves Trailer Park and heading in to Summerside for a celebratory dinner followed by a bonfire Chez Caseley - thanks Stephen and Shelley!

Aug 5 - 14, 2005 - Due East

August 31, 2005 on 11:34 am | In Travel, Camping | No Comments

In Bali, a big day cycling was 100k, and this equated to a HUGE travel day by car/scooter/truck for Balinese as well. They couldn’t believe how far I was riding each day, and 80-100k just isn’t that far to be honest. I haven’t tallied the number of times I have driven across Canada or the continent, but I have lots of experience in the matter (RAAM for example) . Having gone a month without a 1000k+ road trip, it was time… (not to mention time for a TDI!)

June 18-19 - Chico’s 24 Hours of Summer Solstice

July 18, 2005 on 4:05 pm | In Cycling | No Comments

What do you get when you take 5 MTB racers (3 of whom haven’t ridden offroad yet this year), enter them in to a 24 Hour race and call the team “Shawn’s Stag”? A convincing win in the 150-199 age group category! Not too shabby, especially when 2 rotations are at 4 people when Derek had to attend a 2nd stag that evening… Good trails, I think 1 crash per person (at least), no flats or mechanicals, a few cramps and a few beer. Good times - congrats guys and especially Shawn!

Chico’s 24 Hour events are the bomb - he offers a fantastic environment for all levels of riders and great camping facilities. No better way to race a 24 Hour.

June 11-12 - Rideau Lakes Cycling Tour

July 18, 2005 on 4:01 pm | In Cycling | No Comments

The Rideau Lakes Cycling Tour is an annual challenge attracting upwards of 2,000 cyclists to ride backroads from Ottawa to Kingston and back the next day. The event is somewhat supported, in that it includes accomodation in residence at Queen’s, a bag shuttle each day, and a few organized waypoints en route. Saturday proved sunny and hot, even at the early 7am departure time… our crew consisted of 13 riders for Saturday and 12 for Sunday. And a fine crew they were! Lots of great conversation and plenty of spare horsepower… luckily for me, this is a summer event as more than half of our group were former varsity xc ski racers. Add in a former national level roadie, an adventure racer with international experience and a couple of we MTB racers and we had a well prepared group to tackle the distance.

Rideau Lakes

June 10, 2005 on 11:23 am | In Cycling | No Comments

Off to Ottawa for the Rideau Lakes cycling tour, hosted by the Ottawa Bicycle Club. We’re going to be riding the Classic - 177k route from Ottawa to Kingston, overnighting at Queen’s Vic Hall rez and then riding back to Ottawa on Sunday. I drove most of this route last year supporting Tour For Kids and though that was fun, I can’t wait to ride the route! Good friends, tree-lined, windy roads, exposed limestone and Canadian Shield and some sunshine. Good stuff indeed…

Weather is calling for 31C with 30% chance of thunder boomers… hope there are some well-placed pubs along the way - the safest shelter of course!

May 20 - Krabi to Phuket

May 28, 2005 on 4:11 pm | In Travel, Thailand | No Comments

Woke up this morning, packed my stuff and headed out for a good breakfast… had to match yesterday’s great breakfast of yogurt with muesli and fresh fruit, plus an ‘American’ breakfast - 2 eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. Sure enough, the cafe around the corner looking out towards the ‘old’ pier (the government built a new pier some 3kms out of downtown, much to the bemusement of locals. Eventually, they had to mandate transfer lest the new site never be used) on the river. Sure enough, I had a great round 2 of breakfast. Even better, another traveller popped in for a quick snack. It turned out he was a Swede just returning from 2 months volunteering with clean up on Koh Phi Phi. Continue reading May 20 - Krabi to Phuket…

Home Sweet Home

Wow, what a change 21 hours of flying makes… I’m back home in southern Ontario. 21 hours of flying over 23 consecutive hours. Thank goodness Cathay Pacific leaves some knee room, gives you decent food, lots of drinks and has individual monitors for all in cattle class. Nice airline indeed.
